Casek Gourd Art (set of 2)
The Casek is a cross between a Shekere and a Caxixi created by MITIMETH. When shaken and rotated this casek makes a mixture of soft and sharp percussive sounds. Lovely table art décor gift items. Available in sets of two.
Story
This colorful classic Casek from the MITIMETH x KESA collection in Nigeria is partly woven and hand painted depciting identities in Nigeria. Shaped like a mini-gourd, it is made with water hyacinth, papier mache and oil paints. The painted faces present a picture of the variety of tribal marks that identify our diverse ethnic groups across Nigeria. Tribal marks or scarifications are specific identification and beautification marks designed on the face or body. They are our cultural identity. They form part of our history. And as cultures get diluted or forgotten due to urbanization, westernization and migration, these faces serve as delightful reminders of the marks that identify us. Home décor and a cultural teaching aid for generations that are coming after us.
